The Mental Load of Motherhood: Why So Many Mums Feel Overwhelmed

As a mum, you've probably heard of the mental load. It's the invisible work of holding everything together: juggling childcare, managing the household, keeping on top of work, remembering appointments, and constantly thinking about everyone else's needs. So often, mums carry this load alone—or, at the very least, carry the majority of it.

It's no wonder so many of us feel overwhelmed.

When you're carrying the mental load, there's very little opportunity to truly switch off. And if that wasn't enough, social media is constantly telling us how we should be parenting, what our homes should look like, and how we should be spending our time. Before we know it, we're comparing ourselves to other mums and feeling an enormous amount of pressure to be the "perfect" parent.

The result? We're snapping at the people we love, overthinking everything, lying awake at night, and feeling guilty about it all. And when we do finally get a rare moment to ourselves, we're often too exhausted to do anything except scroll on our phones while the TV plays in the background—let alone do something that actually helps us recharge.

Sound familiar?

The problem is that simply pushing through and telling yourself, "This is just motherhood," isn't going to make things better. Instead, chronic stress becomes your normal. Your nervous system stays on high alert, making it harder to relax, enjoy the present moment, and cope with everyday challenges.

There's no denying that being a mum is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world—but it's also one of the most demanding. Difficult days are part of parenting, but living in a constant state of overwhelm doesn't have to be.

Looking after yourself isn't selfish; it's essential. Because when you're cared for, you're better able to care for the people who depend on you.
